Do You Have the Computer Flu?

Once again, its flu season however, it may not be a virus that is making you feel ‘off’, it just may be the love affair you’re having with your computer. Yes, you read that right. Your computer may be making you sick or giving you aches and pains. Okay now hear me out before you decide that I’ve totally lost my marbles.

Feeling Tired? We all need our beauty sleep and you need plenty of rest to keep from getting the seasonal flu so, if your computer is in the same room that you’re sleeping in, you may not be getting quality sleep.  Researchers claim that a blue light is emitted from your computer screen saver or the light that is flashing from your power button light may actually mess up your sleep.  Bottom line, move your commuter out of your bedroom or completely turn off your computer when you go to bed. In addition, if you’re having sleeping issues, they say to stop surfing the net 2-3 hours before going to bed because the computer waves stimulate the brain.

Having Headaches? Have you noticed that the young computer designers seem to have perfect eyesight?  Nevertheless, the defaulted adjustable fonts on your computer screen maybe too small for you and could be straining your eyes, giving you headaches. Simply adjust font size in your computer by going to control panel-appearance & personalization and then go to personalization.

You may not know this but you don’t blink as much when looking at your computer, so look away to rest your eyes every 30 minutes  and focus on something in the distance. Furthermore, too prevent eyestrain, rearrange your computer to reduce glare from windows and keep the screen at arms length. You can also turn up the brightness on your computer screen, or turn on a light in the room, whatever you do, don’t use your computer as your sole light source when you’re using it or you may end up with eyestrain and headaches.

Any Neck & Shoulder Pain? Your momma may have told you to sit up straight and now I’m going to do it too. You must have good posture with your feet flat on the floor when using your computer. You may see some young pup on TV sitting with their legs crossed typing on their laptop. Yeah well, they’re youthful and nimble, trust me I tried it and after ten minutes my hinnie was sore, my legs were numb, and it took me several minutes to get on my knees and push myself up off the ground. (Can you say… not attractive?)

The correct way to situate your computer is to have the top of your computer screen at eye level so you are slightly looking down, not up. Have the keyboard slightly slanted, if necessary put a book or two under your keyboard.

Once again, don’t forget to position your chair so your feet are flat on the floor and sit up straight to prevent neck or shoulder pain.
